Masa Abdo

Diabetes Co-Chair

My name is Masa Abdo and I'm from Houston. I went to University of Houston for two years of undergrad, and I am now a P2 at UHCOP. In my free time, I like to shop, workout, and catch up on my favorite shows!

The Fighting Diabetes Initiative aims to educate the community about the chronic disease of diabetes. As Diabetes Initiative Chairs, we plan to provide multiple educational opportunities for UHCOP students such as, diabetes training, health fairs, and volunteering at the Diabetes Awareness Wellness Network (DAWN) in the Third-Ward. During National Diabetes month in November, it will be packed with challenges, pin sales, sugar-free ice cream sales, and plenty more!

Why did you choose SNPhA? I chose SNPhA because it was one of the organizations that I was intrigued by since day one of pharmacy school. SNPhA's mission to serve the underserved was ultimately the reason I joined such organization. After attending multiple health fairs, and different events hosted by SNPhA, it proved to me that this mission was fulfilled.

Why did you choose SNPhA? The reason I chose SNPhA is for the message it carries with serving the underserved and the undeniable passion the members had for the community. Instantly being a part of SNPhA is being a part of a family of motivators and supporters in order to come together for a common purpose of helping patients and spreading awareness. With the endless opportunities SNPhA has I was able to go out into the community and see patients just in my first month as a P1, which led me to feel like I was making an impact from the start.

The Diabetes Initiative has many opportunities that advocate and educate patients for good health, lifestyle modifications, and managing their diabetes. Some goals we have are to incorporate diabetes training for the members, educate at elementary, middle schools, high schools, and be present in minority populations in Houston. Also be sure to expect an eventful Diabetes month in November with challenges, pin selling, educational videos, seminar, care packages, and more. The initiative will also be having a diabetes member of the month which will have the honor of receiving a reward to showcase.
