Irene Huang

Mental Health Co-chair

My name is Irene Huang and I’m originally from Dallas, TX and I’m an avid dog lover. I adopted a dog after Hurricane Harvey.

Our purpose in the mental health initiative is to raise awareness by educating our community, advocating support and treatment, and reducing the social stigma associated with mental illness. While mental illness is prevalent and can impact children, adolescents, and adults, there are many individuals who are untreated due to the associated stigma. In order to prevent this, speaking about mental illness can open up a conversation with those in our community. From this, we can dissipate any myths regarding mental illness and educate our community on support and treatment. This year, we have seminars, shadowing opportunities, and educational opportunities planned.

Why did you choose SNPhA? As an organization, SNPhA stood out to me because it allows me the opportunity to serve the underserved in our local communities through health fairs, outreach programs, and education events. In addition to this, it also allows me the ability to enhance my own professional development as a pharmacy student through interacting with a diverse community and applying my knowledge from the classroom. When I was a P1, this mission to help our minority communities resonated with me and my passion has grown through the opportunities to connect with our local community.

Why did you choose SNPhA? I chose SNPhA because public health is one of my passions. I think that catering our services towards underserved communities means that we have a healthier community, which is a great step towards bettering our population health. As healthcare professionals, I think that we can play a big role in closing health disparities!

Michell Nguyen

Mental Health Co-chair

My name is Michell Nguyen and I love pugs!!! I have 2 of them: Melvin and Penelope and they are my life! I love to exercise and be outdoors. If I could choose any job outside of pharmacy, I would choose to be a cartoon voice over or own a pug friendly coffee shop.

As this year’s MH initiative co-chair, I hope to not only spread awareness about mental health and break the social stigma, but I also hope to help UHCOP students find a way to better their own mental health. In the midst of trying to help others, I think we often forget to take care of ourselves and realize that our own health is just as important.
